CULT Japanese director Takeshi Kitano's "Zatoichi" won the People's Choice Award at the 28th Toronto International Film Festival last Sunday, just days after winning two honours at the Venice festival.

Elsewhere at Toronto, the journalist-selected Discovery Award went to the American film "Rhinoceros Eyes", directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Aaron Woodley. This narrowly beat the Chinese movie "My Father and Me", directed by and starring mainland actress Xu Jinglei.

Denys Arcand's "The Barbarian Invasions" won the trophy for best Canadian film.

The awards were handed out at Toronto's closing ceremony last Sunday afternoon. In all, 339 films were shown over 10 days including 64 international premiers.

Although film executives said the festival was a better place to launch than buy films, many buyers did pull out their wallets at Toronto.

"In a pretty bleak year, Toronto has proven itself to be a consistently productive festival," said Tom Quinn, vice president of acquisitions at Samuel Goldwyn films.

"It's a nice indication that there are available movies that are of quality and movies you get excited about."
