Spanish surprise
CHINESE actress and director Xu Jinglei won the Silver Shell
Award for Best Director at the 52nd San Sebastian film festival
in Spain last Saturday. The international festival honoured Xu
for her touching film "Letter from an Unknown Woman" (Yige
Mosheng N¨¹ren De Laixin).
The movie, adapted from an Austrian romance novel by Stefan
Zweig, tells the story of a woman who devotes her life to a
secret lover.
Apart from directing, Xu also stars in the leading role
alongside veteran Chinese actor Jiang Wen.
It is scheduled for theatrical release in China on Valentine's
Day 2005 and Xu is confident that it will satisfy audiences: "I
give my assurance that moviegoers will feel that every penny
they paid for the ticket is worth it."
This is the second movie Xu has directed. She made her
directorial debut in 2002 with "My Father and I" (Wo He Fuqin),
which was well received.
Some 16 movies were competing over eight days in the competition
in Spain.
A film about Iraqi child victims of war "Turtles Can Fly", from
Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi, won the Concha de Oro (Golden
Shell) award. |
